Traditions & Superstitions

There are so many wedding superstitions and traditions that we thought it might be interesting for you to have a look at some of them and discover where they come from. And even if you are not superstitious, it’s very likely you are going to follow some of these traditions…!

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe: This popular rhyme refers to the bridal attire and dates back to the Victorian times. Something old is usually something belonging to a grandparent or parent and represents a link with the bride’s family and continuity of family (it could be a piece of family jewellery, for example). Something new represents the hope for health, happiness and success in the new life the bride is entering (it could be the wedding dress). Something borrowed is something that has been already worn by a happy bride and is supposed to bring good luck, but must be absolutely returned, otherwise bad luck will follow (it could be a handkerchief or a piece of jewellery). Something blue symbolizes fidelity and constancy (it could be a blue or blue-trimmed garter). A silver sixpence is supposed to bring wealth to the newlyweds.
