Flowers
The first bridal bouquets were made of strong herbs and spices, such as thyme and garlic, which were meant to ward off evil spirits. A bride was believed to be especially lucky on her wedding day, therefore the throwing of the bouquet is a way of spreading her good fortune. Whoever catches the bouquet will be blessed with good luck and will be the next to marry.
The groom is supposed to wear a flower that appears in the bridal bouquet in his buttonhole, a tradition which dates back to Medieval times when knights used to wear their lady’s colours as a declaration of their love.
Carrying the bride
Carrying the bride over the threshold has two explanations. The first is to protect her from evil spirits which were thought to be hiding under the threshold. The second is to avoid bad luck which would follow in case the bride tripped or fell when entering the newlywed’s home for the first time.
